BLOG: DRAIN COVER PROJECT

My family noticed that leaves from the tree in our backyard were often clogging up the drain during rainstorms, leading to potential flooding, and they called on me to figure out a solution! My dad suggested making a domed drain cover - also known as a beehive drain cover - so that even when leaves were washed next to it, they wouldn’t be on top to block the water flow. After a couple of mock-ups and some quick CAD modelling, I came up with this design, which I tried to make somewhat aesthetically nice as well as effective. I was a bit apprehensive about making it out of plastic at first, but it’s solid enough to stomp on and has held up surprisingly well since it was put in. Maybe it’s a simple project in the grand scheme of things, but I haven’t done that many real-life engineering projects like this before and I think it’s a pretty good first step.
